The painting done by Gustav Klimt had been originally bought by a Jewish family in Vienna, looted by the Nazis during Austria?s annexation, then acquired by the French following the conclusion of the War. Now it is set to be returned to the descendants of its original owners.

Rosiers sous les arbres (Roses under the Trees), a painting done by Gustav Klimt in 1905 will be returned to the family of its original owner, Nora Stiasny, according to an announcement made by Roselyne Bachelot, France?s culture minister. This restitution is set to be the first of many under the French culture ministry?s mission to return artworks that were looted from Jewish owners by the Nazis over the course of the Second World War (WWII).
?This decision to proceed with the restitution of a major work of public collections illustrates our commitment to the duty of justice and reparation vis-Ã -vis the dispossessed families,? Bachelot said in her announcement.
