Resort Must-Have: Mercedes Salazar
John Galliano once said, “the joy of dressing is an art.” While this is very true, sometimes a collection comes along that embodies so much artistry you don’t really need anything else. Much the same can be said about accessories designer Mercedes Salazar, and her namesake brand. Launching in 2001 in Colombia where she was born and raised, Mercedes Salazar turned to nature for inspiration. Throughout her 17 year reign, the visionary designer has incorporated specific weave techniques and craftsmanship from indigenous communities of Colombia, giving talent a voice through jewelry.
From tousled and woven wasps to brightly hued pineapples, the statement-making accessories line is definitely one to watch, and add to your holiday wardrobe. Intricate manufacturing processes result in qualitative, and simply stunning earrings and bags – think pineapple earrings but 3D and big enough for your phone!
The current collection features iraca palm and thread. Pieces like the Queen Guacamaya earrings shaped like a tropical parrot, are woven into miniature objet d’art and finished off with long-line tassels that scrape the collarbone upon movement. Or the Garden of Lilacs and Violets earrings, which are made from artisanal flowers, and look like itsy bitsy bits of botanical magic on the lobe.
